Today’s #ThrowbackThursday topic, gifts, might seem a little premature. Isn’t Chrismahanukwanzakah months off? You’re absolutely right, dear reader. But, as the savvy and foresight of our Great Depression frugalistas decrees: thou shalt shop for holiday and birthday gifts as early as possible!!

Take advantage of those late-summer garage sales to pick up something unique on the cheapYou’ll get huge savings and be able to find some really high-quality, interesting gifts – and you won’t get caught overspending on subpar presents in a rush to finish your shopping. Plus, you’re investing that money directly back into your neighbors!

Another great place to find gifts for your loved ones is your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, secondhand, and/or consignment shop. You never know what you can find! Be sure to look up the sale days for your local store and head in when you know the savings are ripe – and don’t forget to be kind to your cashier! They might know store secrets like the day of the week or time of the month that they’re likely to get the biggest haul. It always pays to be friendly :)

Even better, make your own gifts. There’s nothing like a handmade gift to say “I love you” to your favorite folks. It doesn’t hurt that they’re often much cheaper and more easily customizable than anything you can find in a store! Here’s a fabulous roundup of over 100 inexpensive holiday presents you can make in a snap. And here’s another collection of 39 gorgeous homemade gifts that would be great for birthdays, Christmas, and everything in between!
