Try lavender and rosemary. To get rid of a headache you can put a drop of peppermint oil on your temples.

Commercial air fresheners are made from chemicals and artificial scents. Use your favorite essential oils as natural air fresheners and get the mood benefits at the same time!

Do you look forward to retreating to your bedroom at the end of a long day? I know I do! Which is why it’s so important that my bedroom is a soothing oasis, a relaxing place to which I can escape and let go of the stress and hectic activity of the day. You might not be able to get a vacation as often as you’d like, but you can relax at home if you turn your bedroom into an oasis. It’s not hard to do…and, it doesn’t cost a lot to make it fabulous! So get started and create your quiet place.

1. No clutter. This is the most important part of creating your zen space- I mean, how can anyone relax when there’s clutter all around? Hang up your clothes right away and get your laundry into the hamper. Keep things neat by using bookcases, storage boxes and bins, and a beautiful nightstand with doors.
2. Make your bed. Every morning! (See #1.)
3.  Fresh flowers. A bouquet of fresh flowers doesn’t have to cost more than a few dollars but gives you so much bang for your buck, bringing color, aroma, and a touch of luxury to your room. Yes, you’ll have to replace them every week, but that just lets you change up the decor a bit, keeping it interesting.
4. Decorate with blue. Blue is a soothing and relaxing color that can actually lower your heart rate and blood pressure. If you’re painting, choose a shade in the blue family, but you don’t have to repaint the walls just to get the blue in. Incorporate the color by using it for your linens, pillows, rugs, or other accessories. If you like a pop of bold color, add it in the accents.
5. Bedside rug. A cozy rug by your bed adds warmth and a comforting touch. It will also help absorb sound, keeping your retreat a more quiet place.
6. Art. Artwork is the finishing touch that ties the decor together. And art can be a soothing or inspiring component to your room, so include things that make you happy.
7. Fragrance. Use essential oils in a diffuser, or light scented candles for a relaxing ambience. Citrus and lavender are soothing and comforting scents.
8. Lots of pillows. Lots of pillows on the bed gives a feeling of luxury and makes your bed a cozy, comforting place to read. Pillows are available at all price points, so this is an expensive way to add luxury to your space.
9. Lighting. Set up lighting with a dimmer, or use bedside lamps for soft light. Sunlight is a great mood enhancer, so if your room gets sun, cover the windows with sheer drapes so you can wake up to natural light.

You deserve a place to unwind, a space that takes you away from the chaos of the outside world. Create that space for yourself in your very own bedroom!

How’d you like my previous post about home remedies from the kitchen? I just love the idea that simple things that are typically found in the average kitchen can do so much more for us. I love natural remedies as an alternative to products that have chemicals, and of course, I love saving money by not having to pay for for medicines. I got so excited that I continued researching for more kitchen items that can help in other ways, and here’s what I found:

1. Calcium rich foods. Dairy, almonds, broccoli, leafy greens, and sardines can help with relief of PMS symptoms. Definitely worth a try!
2. Prunes. Everyone knows that prunes are good for relieving constipation, but I had to give them a shout-out here and point out that they are so much more gentle on your digestive system than OTC laxatives.
3. Sugar. Who knew that sugar could get rid of hiccups? Dissolve a teaspoon of sugar under your tongue and make those hiccups stop.
4. Lemon. Drink lemon juice to help get rid of sore throats and colds. Apply it to your skin to lighten dark spots, but be patient- it takes some time to see results.
5. Apple cider vinegar. Because it has anti-inflammatory properties, it’s good to dab on bruises and burns. Also try it as a soak for smelly feet.
6. Lavender. Besides it’s divine aroma, lavender eases tension and muscle spasms. Rub on some lavender lotion at bedtime to soothe and help you fall asleep.
7. Dark chocolate. Reduces stress hormone levels. So treat yourself and relax!
8. Turmeric. Eat it to boost your immune system and ease arthritis symptoms. Make a paste and apply it to minor cuts and burns as an antiseptic.
9. Honey. A spoonful of honey can soothe a sore throat and calm a cough. Also apply it to minor wounds and canker sores.
10. Banana. Mash it and apply to burns and sunburns for some relief. Apply banana peel to insect bites to relieve itching.
11. Honeydew. Eating honeydew can do so many good things for your body. It relieves bloating and acts as a natural diuretic that also helps with electrolyte replacement. And it has potassium, which can help with muscle cramps.

Another thing I love about these home remedies is that these items are ready to use as-is. No measuring or mixing necessary. Add that to the fact that they’re all natural, and of course, pretty much free, and you’ve got a win-win situation here!
