I love the fresh taste of lemon, especially in the summer. Lemonade is a classic summer drink, and I love to squeeze a few drops of fresh lemon juice over fruit salad to give it a little extra zip. In fact, I use lemon all year in lots of my cooking because it just adds a little something to almost anything. But lemon is so much more than that! There are so many other ways to use lemons around the kitchen and here are 6 of them:

  1. Keep brown sugar soft. Don’t you hate it when you’re all ready to start baking, but your brown sugar is rock hard? Add a piece of lemon peel to the box to prevent clumping and hardening.
  2. Keep rice from sticking. Add a few drops of lemon juice to the pot while cooking.
  3. Prevent apples from turning brown. The acid in the lemon prevents the oxidation process. Works great for avocado, too!
  4. Meat tenderizer. The acid works its magic here, too, breaking down the fibers that can make some cuts of meat tough.
  5. Low sodium flavoring. The natural flavor of lemon is so rich you can cut down on salt.
  6. Deodorize the refrigerator. Get some lemon juice on a cotton ball or sponge and place in the refrigerator for a few hours to absorb bad odors.

These are just some of the amazing ways that lemon can be your helper in the kitchen. And all for just a few cents per lemon!
