Is there anyone who’s never suffered the horror and humiliation of a skin breakout? I’m willing to bet that most of us have been there, and it’s not fun. There is a lot that comes into play regarding skin, like genetics, or skin type, for example, and it’s easy to feel like breakouts are yet another thing in life that’s beyond our control. And while there’s not a whole lot we can do about our genes, there are some steps that everyone can take to prevent breakout, and they’re pretty simple, too!

Wash your face with lukewarm water: Keeping your face clean is extremely important, and lukewarm water is the best temperature for your delicate skin.

Don’t rub too hard: Use a cleanser to remove oils, but don’t rub too hard. Work it in using a gentle circular motion. You can use your fingertips or a soft washcloth.

Moisturize: Acne products can dry out your skin, so it’s important to moisturize. When your skin feels dry it will stimulate the production of more oil, which puts you at more risk for acne. So after washing, use a moisturizer that is non-comedogenic- which means it won’t clog your pores.

Use the right makeup: If you’re prone to breakouts, use makeup that’s oil-free, not too heavy, and is non-comedogenic.

Keep hair products off your face: Be neat when applying to your hair, because some hair products can clog pores. If your hair is greasy, keep it back in a ponytail.

Wash off sweat: If you’ve been working out, or it’s hot, don’t let sweat dry on your face.

Change your pillowcase: Oils from your face accumulate on your pillow, so change your pillowcase at least once a week.

Don’t touch your face: To avoid bringing acne causing germs to your skin, avoid touching your face throughout the day. And if you do get a pimple, don’t touch it! Messing with your zits puts you at risk for infection and scarring.

Clean your phone: Your phone is a playground for germs! Clean it regularly to help avoid breakouts.

Don’t eat too much sugar: Eating too much sugar may trigger acne.

Stay away from greasy food: Makes sense.

Drink lots of water: Drinking water helps keep your skin well hydrated, and just healthier in general.

Don’t stress: It’s true that stress can bring on a breakout, so do your best to stay calm. Try meditating, yoga, or any regular exercise, which will keep you in a good mood.

Hitting the genetic jackpot is nice, but we can’t all be so lucky. We can take control of some things, though, and these good skin habits can help us have fewer breakouts!
