I’ll just go ahead and admit it: I don’t like to bake. I might consider myself a cookie monster, but I just don’t like to make the cookies myself. The weird thing is that I always have a box of baking soda in my pantry- just in case the urge to bake strikes me suddenly. It never does, and I still always buy a new box of baking soda when I feel like the one I have has hung around for too long.

But baking soda is not just for baking- and now that I know this, I have a feeling I’ll be buying new boxes more often, because I’ll actually be using it up! Check out all the things you can do with baking soda:

1. Freshen breath:

You can use baking soda ini place of mouthwash! Mix one teaspoon in a cup of water, then swish and rinse!

2. Exfoliate:

Make a skin scrub with baking soda: Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water; rub onto your skin in a circular motion, and rinse. This will remove the dry, dead skin on the surface and leave you feeling soft.

3. Relieve itch:

Make a paste with baking soda and water and apply to insect bites to relieve itch.

4. Soothe skin:

Add one cup of baking soda to your bath for a soothing soak. This is great for sunburn, rashes, eczema, or other skin irritation.

5. Clean brushes and combs:

Pull out any hair that’s stuck, and then soak in one cup of water with 1 teaspoon baking soda.

6. Bathroom scrub:

Sprinkle baking soda on the tub, sink, counters, and tile. Wipe with a damp cloth and rinse.

7. Clean the microwave:

Use baking soda to clean and deodorize your microwave; scrub with a damp sponge.

8. Freshen the refrigerator:

I think most people know about this one- just make sure to change it every two months or so.

9. Freshen the carpet:

Sprinkle baking soda on carpets, let it sit a while, then vacuum.

10. Keep flowers longer:

Keep cut flowers longer by adding a teaspoon of baking soda to the water in the vase.
